Mulu Airport (MZV) in Sarawak is the airport for Gunung Mulu National Park, and the airline recorded there is AirBorneo. AirBorneo's check-in and baggage rules differ between its Twin Otter and ATR aircraft, so check which one your flight uses before you pack.
Direct domestic flights recorded from Mulu Airport go to the places below. The airline recorded on each is AirBorneo.
| Destination | Arrival airport | Airline recorded |
|---|---|---|
| Kota Kinabalu | Kota Kinabalu International Airport (BKI) | AirBorneo |
| Kuching | Kuching International Airport (KCH) | AirBorneo |
| Miri | Miri Airport (MYY) | AirBorneo |
AirBorneo took over all services previously operated by MASwings on 1 January 2026, according to Malaysia Aviation Group. A guide or booking page that still names the old operator for Mulu is out of date.
AirBorneo flies both Twin Otter and ATR72-500 aircraft, and its rules depend on which one operates the flight. The figures below are from AirBorneo's own conditions of carriage.
| Rule | Twin Otter | ATR72-500 |
|---|---|---|
| Check-in | At the airport counter only | Online check-in available |
| Free checked baggage | 10 kg | 20 kg |
| Cabin baggage | 1 piece, 7 kg, 29 x 33 x 36 cm | 1 piece, 7 kg, 56 x 30 x 18 cm |
| Unaccompanied minors | Not accepted | May be accepted |
| At the boarding gate | At least 30 minutes before departure | At least 30 minutes before departure |
A cabin bag sized for the ATR limit will not meet the Twin Otter one. AirBorneo says check-in deadlines vary by airport, so confirm the deadline for Mulu with the airline.
Sarawak Tourism Board gives March to September as the drier season at Gunung Mulu National Park, better for trekking and caving, and notes heavy rain especially from November to February. Temperatures there run between 23 and 32 degrees Celsius through the year.
AirBorneo's conditions of carriage count adverse weather among causes outside its control, and in those cases the airline has no immediate obligation to carry, re-route or refund, only to make reasonable efforts to assist. On 1 September 2026, Malay Mail reported that haze led AirBorneo to cancel selected flights from Kuching even though runway visibility there stayed above the airport's minimum. Leave time between a Mulu flight and anything booked separately.
Section 66 of the Immigration Act 1959/63 restricts Malaysian citizens' right of entry into Sabah and Sarawak, so a citizen needs a pass or permit to enter and stay in Sarawak. For a Malaysian from Peninsular Malaysia, the Immigration Department issues the Document in Lieu of Internal Travel Document as an alternative to a Malaysian passport or Restricted Travel Document. It is free, covers a single journey, allows a Social or Business Visit Pass of up to three months, and is issued at the immigration counters in Sabah and Sarawak airport arrival halls.
The Document in Lieu needs an identity card for travellers aged 12 and over, or a birth certificate for those under 12, with no parental consent required. A stay of more than three months needs a Restricted Travel Document, valid for five years, and as of September 2026 the Immigration Department's list of Sarawak issuing offices does not include Mulu.
For a domestic flight out of Sarawak, the Immigration Department asks for an identity document, a valid pass and a boarding pass as proof of travel.
Gunung Mulu National Park was gazetted on 1 August 1974 with 52,865 hectares, according to the Forest Department Sarawak. Two extensions in 2011, of 4,555 and 28,251 hectares, took it to about 85,671 hectares.
Day-to-day management of the park is split between two bodies. Sarawak Forestry Corporation manages the Wilderness Zone, which is more than 90 per cent of the park's area, and the Sarawak Government appointed Borsarmulu Park Management as managing agent for the smaller Tourism Zone. The park states that this arrangement is not privatisation, and that 97 per cent of Borsarmulu's Mulu workforce is of local origin, from the Berawan, Penan, Kelabit, Iban, Kayan, Kenyah, Lun Bawang, Saban and Tering communities.
Four show caves are open to the public: Clearwater Cave, Deer Cave, Lang's Cave and Wind Cave. Deer Cave is known for its sunset bat exodus.
Sarawak Tourism Board describes the park's Canopy Skywalk as the longest tree-based canopy walk in the world. The trek to the Pinnacles, limestone spires on Mount Api, is given as three days and two nights, and the Gunung Mulu Summit Trail to the park's highest peak as four days.
Sarawak Tourism Board gives the park's hours as 8am to 5pm daily. Every visitor needs a five-day entry pass, and the park's own site says a revised conservation-fee structure took effect on 1 February 2026, so check the current fees there before you go.
