Miri Airport (MYY), in northern Sarawak, is the main hub for the Rural Air Services (RAS) that AirBorneo flies in Sarawak and Sabah, and the federal Transport Minister described it in May 2026 as the second busiest airport in Sarawak after Kuching International Airport (KCH). Some of those rural flights use the Twin Otter, which means checking in at the airport counter, where passengers and their hand luggage are weighed, and a smaller baggage allowance. Malaysians from Peninsular Malaysia flying in from Kuala Lumpur still pass an immigration counter at Miri, although the flight is domestic.
Miri Airport is on Jalan Airport, 98000 Miri, and Malaysia Airports Holdings Berhad (MAHB) operates it. In May 2026 the federal Transport Minister called it a primary domestic hub as well as the main hub for RAS flights. The federal Ministry of Transport defines rural air services as non-economic flights in remote, sparsely populated parts of Sabah and Sarawak, where air transport is the main link with the outside world.
The airlines recorded on domestic flights from Miri are AirAsia, Malaysia Airlines and AirBorneo. Direct domestic flights recorded from Miri go to:
| Destination | Airport | Airlines recorded |
|---|---|---|
| Kuala Lumpur | Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KUL) | AirAsia, Malaysia Airlines |
| Kuching | Kuching International Airport (KCH) | AirAsia |
| Kota Kinabalu | Kota Kinabalu International Airport (BKI) | AirAsia |
| Gunung Mulu National Park | Mulu Airport (MZV) | AirBorneo |
| Bintulu | Bintulu Airport (BTU) | AirBorneo |
| Sibu | Sibu Airport (SBW) | AirBorneo |
| Mukah | Mukah Airport (MKM) | AirBorneo |
| Limbang | Limbang Airport (LMN) | AirBorneo |
| Lawas | Lawas Airport (LWY) | AirBorneo |
| Labuan | Labuan Airport (LBU) | AirBorneo |
| Marudi | Marudi Airport (MUR) | AirBorneo |
| Long Akah | Long Akah Airport (LKH) | AirBorneo |
| Long Banga | Long Banga Airport (LBP) | AirBorneo |
| Long Lellang | Long Lellang Airport (LGL) | AirBorneo |
| Long Seridan | Long Seridan Airport (ODN) | AirBorneo |
AirBorneo took over the services previously flown by MASwings on 1 January 2026, and has used its own flight code, MY, since January 2026. Its fleet page lists the Boeing 737-800, the ATR 72-500 and the Twin Otter, and the check-in and baggage rules below depend on which of the two propeller aircraft you are booked on.
The federal Ministry of Transport's rural air services table lists the Twin Otter on Miri's routes to Lawas, Marudi, Long Lellang, Long Akah, Mukah, Long Seridan and Long Banga, and the ATR 72-500 on the routes to Mulu, Limbang, Bintulu, Sibu and Labuan. That table dates from the earlier agreement with the previous operator, so confirm the aircraft type with AirBorneo when you book.
For Twin Otter flights, AirBorneo's conditions of carriage allow check-in only at the airport counter. Its check-in page says online check-in is unavailable until further notice because body weight and hand luggage are physically weighed at the counter. Where it believes aircraft weight limits or seating capacity may be exceeded, AirBorneo reserves the right to decide which passengers or bags are carried.
Unaccompanied minors are not accepted on Twin Otter flights, which the airline puts down to operational limitations. Check-in deadlines vary by airport, and passengers on ATR 72 and Twin Otter flights must be at the boarding gate at least 30 minutes before departure.
On ATR 72-500 routes, online check-in opens 48 hours before departure and closes 90 minutes before take-off. Passengers with checked bags then go to a baggage drop counter.
AirBorneo currently allows the following on its ATR 72-500 and Twin Otter services, under conditions of carriage effective 1 July 2026. Check the allowance with AirBorneo before you fly, because conditions of carriage change.
| Aircraft | Free checked baggage | Cabin baggage |
|---|---|---|
| ATR 72-500 | 20 kg | 1 piece, 7 kg |
| Twin Otter | 10 kg | 1 piece, 7 kg |
AirBorneo also allows an infant's cabin piece of 6 kg on top of the 7 kg piece. Cargo space on both aircraft types is limited, so a bulky checked item travels subject to space being available.
AirBorneo's conditions of carriage treat adverse weather and other meteorological conditions as beyond its control. When a flight is cancelled or delayed for those reasons, the airline is under no immediate obligation to carry, re-route or refund passengers, though it says it will make reasonable efforts to assist.
In July 2026 AirBorneo announced a temporary schedule adjustment on a small number of selected routes, to run from 6 July to 24 October 2026, after some of its ATR 72 and Twin Otter aircraft were grounded for technical reasons. The trade publication ch-aviation reported that most of the adjusted services were from AirBorneo's Kota Kinabalu, Miri and Sibu bases. AirBorneo said destinations would stay on the network and affected passengers would be moved to a flight on the same or the next day.
Section 66 of the Immigration Act 1959/63 restricts citizens' right of entry into East Malaysia, and the Immigration Department states that a citizen is subject to holding a pass or permit to enter and be in Sabah or Sarawak. So a Malaysian from Peninsular Malaysia flying in from Kuala Lumpur passes an immigration counter in the arrival hall at Miri, even though the flight is domestic.
For Malaysians from West Malaysia, the Immigration Department's Document in Lieu of Internal Travel Document is an alternative to a passport or Restricted Travel Document, covers a single journey and allows a stay on a Social or Business Visit Pass of up to three months. It is issued without charge at the immigration counters in Sabah and Sarawak airport arrival halls, against an identity card for those aged 12 and over or a birth certificate for younger children. A stay longer than three months calls for a Restricted Travel Document, which Immigration offices in Sarawak issue, one of them in Miri.
For leaving Sarawak on a domestic journey, the Immigration Department lists an accepted identity or travel document (among them a Malaysian passport, a Restricted Travel Document, a MyKad, a MyKid or a birth certificate), a valid pass, and a boarding pass as proof that you are travelling. The department says the valid pass can be an endorsement in a passport or a recognised foreign travel document. Malaysia Airlines says original documents must be presented for verification on domestic flights within Peninsular Malaysia and Sabah and Sarawak.
The Section 66 exemption endorsement releases its holder from needing a pass or permit to live or work in Sabah, and the Immigration Department states that it is issued only by the Sabah State Immigration Department. Do not assume it covers a stay in Sarawak.
MAHB reported in June 2026 that modernised check-in counters at Miri Airport had been completed in May. The terminal was designed for two million passengers a year, according to Sarawak's transport minister in December 2025.
AirBorneo's Miri ticket office is Lot GL 13, on the ground-floor public concourse. Reservations and ticketing enquiries go through the airline's call centre, which is open from 06:00 to 22:00 Malaysia time.
Grab runs airport rides at Miri Airport, with fares fixed upfront on all its services except GrabTaxi, and rides can be booked in advance. Cars take from four to six passengers.
The Ministry of Economy approved the Miri Airport Terminal Upgrading Project under the 13th Malaysia Plan on 27 April 2026, and the federal Transport Minister announced it on 9 May 2026. He said it covers automated and self-service check-in and departure systems, more digitally equipped facilities and upgraded aircraft parking bays, especially for rural air service passengers.
On 10 August 2026, after a briefing from MAHB, Miri's Member of Parliament said early site works had been completed, a tender briefing was due in October 2026 and the letter of award was scheduled for April 2027. He said the build was to take 24 months, and completion was reported as 2030.
The plan he described is a two-level terminal with dedicated facilities for rural air services and separate international and domestic departures, with check-in counters rising from 15 to 24 and boarding bridges from three to nine. Sarawak's transport minister said in December 2025 that the next phase of work would raise the terminal's capacity to four million passengers a year.
A Malaysian from Peninsular Malaysia does. Section 66 of the Immigration Act 1959/63 makes citizens subject to holding a pass or permit to enter Sabah or Sarawak, and the Document in Lieu of Internal Travel Document, obtained at the arrival-hall immigration counter, allows a stay of up to three months. Anyone else should check the Immigration Department's pages for their own documents before travelling.
Under AirBorneo's conditions of carriage effective 1 July 2026, free checked baggage is 20 kg on ATR 72-500 services and 10 kg on Twin Otter services, with one 7 kg cabin piece on both. Bulky items on these aircraft travel subject to cargo space. Confirm the allowance with AirBorneo before you fly.
For ATR 72-500 flights, yes: online check-in opens 48 hours before departure and closes 90 minutes before take-off. For Twin Otter flights, check-in is at the airport counter only, because body weight and hand luggage are weighed there. On both aircraft, be at the boarding gate at least 30 minutes before departure.
AirBorneo is the airline recorded on the direct route from Miri to Mulu Airport, and the Sarawak Tourism Board names a flight from Miri to Mulu Airport as a way to get to the park. The board says Mulu has heavy rainfall throughout the year, especially from November to February, and puts the best time to visit at March to September.
AirAsia, Malaysia Airlines and AirBorneo are recorded on direct domestic flights from Miri. AirAsia and Malaysia Airlines are both recorded to Kuala Lumpur, AirAsia also to Kuching and Kota Kinabalu, and AirBorneo to the other destinations in the table above.
Completion was reported as 2030. Miri's Member of Parliament said in August 2026, after a MAHB briefing, that the letter of award was scheduled for April 2027 and the build was to take 24 months. The upgrade was approved on 27 April 2026 under the 13th Malaysia Plan.
