Firefly (FY) flies ATR 72-500 turboprops and Boeing 737-800 jets, and which Kuala Lumpur airport you use depends on the aircraft. Its jets moved to Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA, code KUL) Terminal 1 in 2025, while its turboprops stayed at Sultan Abdul Aziz Shah Airport (SZB) in Subang. Check-in counters also close earlier for the jets than for the turboprops.

Which Kuala Lumpur Airport Firefly Uses

Malaysia Aviation Group, Firefly's parent company, announced on 30 July 2025 that Firefly's Boeing 737-800 jet services would move from Subang to KLIA Terminal 1. The move ran route by route from 19 August to 3 September 2025, and the ATR 72-500 turboprop services stayed at Subang.

Johor Bahru, Kota Bharu, Penang and Kuala Terengganu are recorded from both KLIA and Subang, so a booking to one of those cities could leave from either airport. Check which airport the booking names before you set out.

Firefly Fare Types: SAVER, BASIC, FLEX and CORPORATE FLEX

Firefly's travel upgrades page lists three fares, SAVER, BASIC and FLEX, for all Firefly destinations. Its fare table gives BASIC one free date or time change and FLEX unlimited changes, both up to two hours before the scheduled departure and subject to a fare difference. FLEX gives access to all seat types, including Preferred and Desired seats, which are subject to availability.

Companies that manage their own business travel can book a CORPORATE FLEX fare through FYbiz PRO, Firefly's corporate travel portal. Firefly lists refundable tickets, unlimited flight changes, a corporate wallet, Enrich Points earning and priority baggage, check-in and boarding among its benefits. Optional FYinsure travel insurance is offered alongside the fares.

Firefly Check-in Times by Aircraft

Firefly's General Conditions of Carriage (version 2.4, effective 1 March 2022) set different check-in windows for its jets and its turboprops.

  • Jet flights: counters open two hours and close one hour before the departure time.
  • Domestic turboprop flights: counters open 90 minutes and close 30 minutes before the scheduled departure time.

The jet counters close 30 minutes earlier than the turboprop ones. A passenger used to the 30-minute close at Subang needs to allow for the one-hour close on a jet flight from KLIA Terminal 1.

Firefly Baggage Allowance

Firefly currently allows one hand-carry bag of up to 7kg, no larger than 56cm x 36cm x 23cm, and its General Conditions of Carriage give the same limits. A hand bag that is overweight, oversized or extra is checked in as checked baggage, for a fee.

Firefly's fare table currently shows checked baggage by fare, as of September 2026: SAVER 10kg, BASIC 20kg and FLEX 30kg. More can be bought in steps of 5kg, 10kg, 15kg, 20kg or 30kg. Confirm the checked baggage allowance for your fare on the booking before you fly.
