Kuala Terengganu is the state capital of Terengganu, on the east coast of Peninsular Malaysia. In the city are the Islamic Civilization Park and its Crystal Mosque, the Terengganu State Museum, the Sultan of Terengganu's palace on Bukit Puteri and the Pasar Payang market. Flights land at Sultan Mahmud Airport (TGG), and from there a shared van and a public bus run to Merang Jetty, where boats leave for Redang, Lang Tengah and the Perhentian Islands.
The Islamic Civilization Park (Taman Tamadun Islam) is on Pulau Wan Man, an island in the Terengganu River. Its operator describes it as "an interactive exploration of Islamic monuments from all over the world", and the replicas there include Malaysia's National Mosque, the Dome of the Rock, the Taj Mahal, Masjidil Haram and the Alhambra.
The Crystal Mosque, built of steel and glass, stands on the same island. It was formally inaugurated on 8 February 2008 by Tuanku Mizan Zainal Abidin, then the Yang di-Pertuan Agong (Malaysia's reigning monarch). Kuala Terengganu City Council and the operator also list a convention centre, the B'Beteng restaurant and family accommodation at The Arra's Villa on the site.
You can reach the park by bus or taxi, or by passenger boat from Shahbandar Pier to Tok Ku Paloh Pier inside the park. The park operator lists its management office as open from 8.30am to 5pm, Sunday to Thursday, and closed on Friday and Saturday (September 2026). The address is Pulau Wan Man, Losong Panglima Perang, 21000 Kuala Terengganu.
The Terengganu State Museum (Muzium Negeri Terengganu) is at Bukit Losong, 20566 Kuala Terengganu. The museum's own site lists it as open from 9am to 5pm, Saturday to Thursday, and closed on Friday (September 2026). Its galleries include History, Royal, Textile, Islam and Crafts galleries and a Petronas gallery.
Istana Maziah is the official palace of the Sultan of Terengganu, used for royal ceremonies, investitures and state functions, according to Kuala Terengganu City Council. It stands on Bukit Puteri in the city centre, near the Terengganu River estuary, and is reached from Jalan Sultan Zainal Abidin or Jalan Hiliran.
The palace replaced Istana Hijau, an earlier palace built in 1870 under Sultan Omar, which burned down. The council records renovations under Sultan Sulaiman Badrul Alam Shah (1920 to 1942) and Sultan Ismail Nasiruddin Shah (1945 to 1979), with further changes in 1972 and 1998.
Pasar Payang, the central market, stands beside the Terengganu River in the city centre and can be reached on foot or by taxi. Kuala Terengganu City Council calls it "the most well-known tourism destination in Kuala Terengganu". On sale are batik, silk, songket and brocade cloth, metal goods, fresh produce and keropok lekor, a fried fish snack.
The Department of Fisheries lists four island groups in Terengganu as marine parks: Pulau Redang, Pulau Perhentian, Pulau Kapas and Pulau Tenggol. The standard protected zone runs 2 nautical miles from the lowest sea level, reduced to 1 nautical mile around Kapas, Kuraman, Rusukan Besar and Rusukan Kecil. The department's prohibited activities include disturbing nesting turtles, collecting turtle eggs and disposing of nets in the water, and a conservation charge applies to marine-park visitors.
Merang Jetty is managed by VigourMarine Transtour Sdn Bhd, which runs boats to Redang, Lang Tengah and the Perhentian Islands. The same operator runs a shared van from Sultan Mahmud Airport to the jetty, a trip of about 30 km and about 45 minutes.
The Perhentian Islands can also be reached from Kuala Besut Jetty, where the boat operator Perhentian Trans names Kuala Terengganu's airport as one of the ways to reach it. Kota Bharu's airport is another, and the Kota Bharu destination guide covers that city.
The north-east monsoon, from November to March, is Malaysia's main rainy season, and the Malaysian Meteorological Department names Terengganu among the east coast states that get heavy rain from it. The National Security Council dated the 2025/2026 monsoon from 13 November 2025 to the start of the transition phase on 29 March 2026.
In November 2025 the Terengganu state government denied ordering the tourist islands closed during the monsoon. It said chalet and resort closures in that period were the operators' own choice, and that boats to Kapas, Perhentian and Redang were still running, weather permitting, watched by the Marine Department and the Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency. Check with your island resort before booking a trip between November and March.
The south-west monsoon, from late May to September, is relatively drier across most of the country.
Flights land at Sultan Mahmud Airport, which the Civil Aviation Authority of Malaysia places about 8 km north-west of Kuala Terengganu. Malaysia Airports operates it, and airlines sell flights to it as Kuala Terengganu. BAS.MY route T10 stops at the airport on its way between the city and Merang Jetty.
Direct domestic flights recorded from Kuala Terengganu go to:

Kuala Terengganu City Council says a town bus runs daily, trishaws operate in the town area and taxis are available around town. BAS.MY Kuala Terengganu, a Ministry of Transport programme operated by Mara Liner, was officially launched on 22 September 2025. Its routes include a city loop, route T100, and route T10 to Merang Jetty.
